This incredible ice box is stamped with “Établissements ALLEZ Frères Paris”. Truly one-of-a-kind.
Allez Frères was a quincaillerie (hardware store) from 1803 to 1930s at 40 quai de la Mégisserie in in Paris (see photos). You can confirm the authenticity of this antique piece by the manufacturer’s stamp.
Wooden ice boxes are where today’s refrigerators have come from. These ice boxes are lined with insulating material to keep the cold from dissipating. Fill the box with the ice and store your desserts, liquor, or wine. This ice box comes with a drainage hole and a collecting tank to collect water resulting from the melting ice. You will need to empty this collecting tank or catch pan daily.
